So my plan of attack was to publish Time Traveller first as it is the first novel length story I had completed.. Now I have completed my third novel it has captured my heart and its characters are pushing me to publish it first. So I have a face off happening in my head. Now I'm torn at what to publish first. Time Traveller or Alvina? Both first books in their own very different series. It has come down to a vote.
Voting will be open until the 28th of August in time for the end of month blog. Where I will announce the winning Story and the month I hope to publish in.
You'll be voting on the first chapter of each story, so whichever start you need more of vote for it. Don't fear, the one that comes in second will be published a few months after. So please vote and share with your friends :) These two stories are very different from each other.
They are purely the result of my imagination so any likeness to people or places is a coincidence. Enjoy and don't forget to vote!
TIME TRAVELLER - Chapter One
“Oh look, a fortune teller!” Squealed the red head grabbing her friends arm, her friend laughed at her enthusiasm but wasn’t too fond of the fortune tellers that attended the show. Which was the exact place her friend was dragging her. The annual show and rodeo for Gallen was in full swing. It was the night that separated the two different days, with the rodeo the following day most of the riders were camping out on the grounds that included Jodi. So most threw caution to the wind to drink the night away. The energy that filled the cool air was electric, it always was. The crowd from the day were still lingering, ranging from kids to teenagers to the occasional drunk that was forever telling the bartender ‘just one more drink’.
“No Amy.” Jodi told her red haired friend firmly, truth was, she wasn’t in the right frame of mind to see what whoever behind the tent flaps wanted to say.
“Let loose, grumpy goose, it will be fun Jods. I promise. Come on, please?” Amy begged as her straight hair knotted in the breeze. Amy was tall and thin. Jodi envied her friend’s build. Unlike her thin friend, she was short and had a bit extra padding on her bones. Jodi sighed tying her soft auburn curls into a messy bun. Not in the mood to argue with her friend she let her friend drag her towards the dark purple tent.
“Fine, but we are going to get something to drink afterwards. I have a feeling I will want something with more bite than soft drink. So you’ll have to buy.” She bargained with Amy, who was happy to agree. The Gallen show committee had gone all out for the town’s 150th birthday; it was more extravagant than she had ever seen it. Rides that were found at city shows were there, fortune tellers, jumping castles and rides that would make any sane person sick. Jodi tried to find anyone she knew so she could get out of going into the tent with Amy. Opening the purple tent flap, Amy pushed her inside. Jodi glared at her friend biting back a groan; she wanted to be anywhere else than where she was. She thought jail looked more appealing. Slowly, with Amy pushing her, Jodi took small steps towards the round table with a light purple sheet draped over it. Glancing around the tent she noticed all the different shades of purple material hung from the ceiling. It was like she had stepped onto a movie set about a Genie who loved the colour purple. She was even more convinced she was in a genie movie when the fortune teller made an appearance dressed like a genie. Her grey hair spilled out from under her hat and she was dressed in all purple. As they sat down Jodi sent her friend a glare as if to say ‘are you serious?’ Amy just shrugged her shoulders with a grin on her face. Forcing herself to stay seated as she started to feel uneasy was a task in itself. The eerie feeling the inside the tent darkened Jodi’s mood, whereas Amy’s smile grew wider.
“Good evening, I’m Madame Rose, whose future will I tell tonight?” Before Jodi had a chance to say Amy’s name, Amy had already said hers. Jodi groaned slightly, fighting the urge to roll her green eyes and tell Amy she didn’t want her future told, but Madame Rose had already started. Jodi didn’t want to know about her future, she was happy without knowing. At least that’s what she told herself. She was seventeen, had a stable job she loved, a roof over her head, and food on the table, she didn’t want to be worrying about the future
“I’d rather not.” She murmured to herself so Amy and Madame Rose couldn’t hear her, but all it got her was Amy’s elbow in her ribs. Amy gave her a stern look.
“I see you will travel to find love but you will stay in Gallen. He will be old fashioned and he will treat you right. You’ll be happy with him and he is your destined other half. It will be everything you have ever dreamed of, if you open yourself up to love…” Madame Rose continued on talking.Jodi had already stopped listening losing all little interest she had on the matter. She thought the fortune teller was a phoney and was saying things that could have some meaning to her. When it was finally over Jodi plastered a fake smile on her face, thanking Madame Rose before dragging Amy out.
“Wasn’t that fun? My best friend will find love!” Amy said her powder blue eyes shone with excitement. Groaning, Jodi kept walking. She had lost all interest in love the day her parents walked out on her. They more like bolted out the gate as soon as she was old enough to fend for herself. The only one Jodi knew she could depend on was herself.
“No Amy it really wasn’t. She was a phoney. You honestly don’t believe what she was saying do you? The whole ‘you will travel to find love but stay in Gallen’ was total BS and you know it. For one it is impossible and even if it had some truth to it why would I care?” Jodi snapped at her friend, her bad mood or snapping didn’t seem to bother Amy at all. A stupid grin was still plastered on her friend’s face. Jodi scowled.
“Relax would you? You can’t accuse her of being a phoney when she could very well have been telling the truth. She also said you were like your mother.” Amy countered as Jodi scoffed.
“I am nothing like my heartless mother.”
“In some ways you are your mother’s daughter, whether you like it or not.” Amy scolded her, unlike Jodi; Amy had always been open-minded when it came to things of the supernatural. Amy had believed Madame Rose, not that a lot of what she had said made sense but it was puzzling like a riddle. The pair made their way to the bar to meet up with Amy’s boyfriend; the subject of the fortune teller was dropped. Waiting in line to get a non-alcoholic drink, Jodi felt an arm wrap around her shoulders. Glancing up to see who it was, she saw her best friend-slash-Amy’s boyfriend, Hayden. He was a six foot tall lanky Bronc and Bull rider. His brown hair was all over the place and his brown eyes shone with love.
“Let me buy you gorgeous girls a drink.” He slurred. Jodi could smell the alcohol on his breath.
“None for me babe,” Amy told him patting him on the chest. He nodded, turning to Jodi.
“And how about you beautiful?”
“Lemonade please, and dude your girlfriend won’t like you calling me beautiful.” Jodi said trying to contain her laughter. A drunk Hayden was an amusing Hayden. Jodi looked over to Amy; she too was trying not to laugh.
“Oh I’m sorry baby; you know you’re the only girl I want. I love you.” He said wobbling on his feet to give Amy a hug. Not being able to contain her laughter, Jodi doubled over in hysterics. After that, Jodi got her drink and Hayden disappeared back into the crowd.
“I best get back to Salem, make sure he is behaving himself.” Jodi said as the night went on. Her black and white paint horse she named Salem was one of the finest Stallions in Gallen. Built like a draught horse he had the speed of a thoroughbred. It also made him an easy target if someone wanted to steal him. He was nearly sixteen hands high at five years of age.
“Righto, I best go find the non-sober boyfriend of mine. I’ll see you bright and early tomorrow Jods.” The girls laughed and waved goodbye, Jodi headed back to where she set up camp. Salem still stood hobbled in the panels.
“Do you think I need love boy?” She asked her horse giving him a pat. Salem moved his head up and down making it look like he was nodding at her. “Not you too,” she scolded him with a smile as she pushed his feed bucket under the bottom rail with her foot. She checked his water before she climbed into her swag. Tomorrow she was entered in the barrel race, one she wasn’t too thrilled about since her barrel horse was about to foal. Sighing, she tried to get what Madame Rose said out of her head. Not that she had believed one word the old woman had said, but she couldn’t help but wonder if she would ever find that man and find it in her heart to love again. She didn’t want to get her hopes up.
ALVINA - Chapter One
The magic the King had put in place to keep Freyhollow Kingdom warm was wearing off and the arctic cold from the Winter Territories was seeping in. The King of Freyhollow was in the neighbouring Kingdom of Wattlecraye signing a contract with the reigning King. It was that of a peace treaty stating that by chance King Freyhollow had a daughter she was to marry the Prince of Wattlecraye to merge the Kingdoms into one unless she met her Twin Soul by the time she turned eighteen. If she had met her Twin Soul she was to sign a contract of her own. Back in the Freyhollow castle the Queen was in agony. Her baby was coming three weeks early. She had a handful of highly trained midwives helping her but she wished her husband was there. In the early hours of dawn, the Queen had given birth to a baby girl. Two weeks on, the castle grounds was covered in a thick blanket of snow. The Princess had yet to meet her father and still remained unnamed. The small Princess had a fleet of nannies as well as her mother looking over her.
"Where is my beautiful pregnant wife?" The King all but yelled as he entered their personal hall. He had been riding hard across grassy plans, rocky terrain and snow covered land for two weeks so he could return before the birth of his child. He had been shocked to see the Kingdom under a layer of snow. It had never happened before. The Queen smiled as she picked up their two week old daughter.
"I'm in here, now be quiet or you'll wake up your daughter." She playfully scolded him as she met him at the door. She smiled up at him. "Theo, I'd like you to meet our little miracle. She is two weeks old today."
"We have a daughter? Oh Nichelle, I'm sorry I wasn't here." Theo said before pulling them close and kissing his wife softly being careful not to squash their daughter. He pulled back just enough to look down at his daughter. After eighteen years of trying, they finally had a daughter and she was perfect.
"Don't be sorry, you're here now. That's all that matters. She needs a name. I didn't want to do that without you. Poor girl has been getting little butterfly from Damarys. Cayleen arrived the day after she was born with Damarys, I'm surprised you didn't see them passing through Guardian's Ridge."
"I was too focused on getting back to you. As for her name, I've been thinking. I quite like the sound of Alvina Nichelle Milliani. Alvina - meaning beloved by all and Nichelle Milliani after her beautiful mother."
"A perfect name for a perfect princess." Nichelle said smiling down at their daughter. She handed Alvina over to Theo. She tucked a light brown strand of hair behind her pointed ear as tears welled in her eyes. It had been a sight she had prayed for, now her husband, the King, was holding his little girl. Seeing her tears Theo kissed the top of her head. Their daughter stirred waking, staring up at her father. Theo gazed down at his daughter, marvelled at the swirling bluish purple in her eyes. He knew that when she grew older that she would be special and would aid in keeping Phazaryon in balance. It was the only realm that hadn't been to war and Theo wanted to keep it that way for as long as he could. When a smile broke out on Alvina's little face the King smiled widely. In the few short minutes he had held his daughter, the little Princess had captured his heart. Theo knew that she would capture the hearts of their people and anyone she met.
"Princess Alvina, daddy's little girl." He said quietly as he made his way over to his wife who was now sitting on the edge of their bed. He sat on the chest at the foot of the bed so he didn't dirty the bed. He noticed that his daughter's ears had a slight point to them like her mother's and he wondered if she too would get wings like he did. His wings were brown and sturdy much like a bird's wings. He had received his wings when he met Nichelle when they were teenagers. It had been a surprise to him as neither of his parents had wings, only magic which he inherited. Theo kept his wings tucked away in between his shoulder blades only bringing them out once in a while to stretch them.
"I wonder what her guide will be. Do you think it will be a Dragon like ours? A pure of heart Unicorn? A Wolf perhaps?"
"You know as well as I that guides don't appear straight away. But my guess would be a Dragon as were our parent's guides and so on. Prince Wattlecraye's guide is a Dragon."
"Do you think she is his Twin Soul?"
"In some ways I hope she is. He is a good kid and will be a great King one day. But I hope she is treated with the utmost respect no matter who her Twin Soul is." Theo told his wife, it was rare that the guides were different from those of their parents. In the land of Phazaryon each person had a life long guide, one that was of flesh and bone that comes and goes as it wishes. Majority of the Freyhollow Kingdom had Dragons as guides, Unicorns and Wolves were less common with some guides unheard of. Most people of Phazaryon had wings; they were neither Faeries, Angels or Pixies, though they lived in Phazaryon as well. They simply had wings whether they were bird like, like a butterfly or that of a dragonfly. Though they appeared human, they called themselves 'Aryon' as they weren't apart of any particular species; they were what they were and had traits from each species. Some dabbled in magic, some taught, some had wings and some had pointed ears like elves. There were also those who had wings, pointed ears and practiced magic but since time began they had all lived in harmony. Freyhollow was the Kindom of light and Wattlecraye was the Kingdom of dark. Though one was light and one was dark, there was not one soul that was pure light or pure dark. One Kingdom just dabbled more on the dark side than the other. The next day the King and Queen made the announcement that the Kingdom had a Princess. They hadn't announced her name as tradition stood that the name of the future heir or heiress wasn't announced until six months later when they did a tour of the Kingdom letting people meet their future ruler.
Six months had passed; the King was about to announce the name of his daughter to the Kingdom when one night she was taken from her bed and never seen again.
"It's time to make the announcement your Highness." The guard said pulling the King out of his grief. King Theo nodded. He walked out and stood in front of his people.
"Today I was supposed to announce the Princess' name. I still will but the pressing matter is that your Princess Alvina Nichelle Milliani was taken from her bed. No one has seen or heard anything. I have my best Knights searching for her but I'm afraid it isn't enough." Without another word Theo returned to his heart broken wife. Word had gotten out and the reigning King of Wattlecraye sent his men to search with the Freyhollow Knights. They searched high and low throughout every inch of the realm. Soon everyone was on the lookout for even the tiniest clue on the location of the missing Princess. Mermaids, Giants, Pirates, Guides, everyone that lived in Phazaryon was searching. As time passed the Queen grew ill, she worried for her daughter's safety. Theo helped his wife through his own grief as he couldn't lose her as well. They had to keep hope that one day the Princess would return to them. As time dragged on the search party was minimised to one or two men. The Kingdom needed their Knights in case a war broke out. After all, the contract didn't state what would happen if the Princess was taken. Theo knew from growing rumours that the future King of Wattlecraye was getting antsy. The little boy he once knew wasn't the man he was becoming.
Voting will be open until the 28th of August in time for the end of month blog. Where I will announce the winning Story and the month I hope to publish in.
